Every filmmaker follows their own creative process. New filmmakers will need to forge their own as they create their first project. The following guidelines are meant to help you succeed in the TVO Today Short Doc Contest.

Step 1: Decide on your subject

Documentary filmmakers will often choose a topic they are personally connected to, or something that directly affects the daily life of someone they know. That lived experience and insider access will provide valuable insight for telling a deeper story.

Step 2: Plan your shoot

Figure out the best, most cost-effective, and efficient way to make your film. You can start strong by ensuring your project follows the rules and regulations for the TVO Today Short Doc Contest.

Step 3: Create your film!

Put your plan into action and shoot your interviews, capture any extra footage (“B-roll”) that you’ll need during editing, and record any voice-over narration. Take your time to find the best way to tell your story.

Step 4: Prepare your submission

Once your film is ready, revisit the submissions checklist page to make sure you haven’t missed any details. Then submit your film and wait for the contest results to be announced.
